Mid-Autumn Festival for Kids: Stories, Words, and Activities
Mid-Autumn Festival (中秋节, Zhōngqiū Jié) is one of the most beloved holidays in Chinese culture. It falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, when the moon is at its fullest and brightest. Families gather, lanterns glow, mooncakes are shared, and children hear the magical story of Chang'e, the lady who lives on the moon. It's a perfect chance to weave Mandarin and Chinese culture together through story, food and play.
The story of Chang'e (a child-friendly retelling)
Long ago, ten suns blazed in the sky and the earth was too hot for anything to grow. A brave archer named Hou Yi (后羿) shot down nine of them, leaving one to warm the world, and the people were saved.
As a reward, Hou Yi was given a magical elixir that would let him live forever in the sky. But he loved his wife, Chang'e (嫦娥), and didn't want to leave her, so he asked her to keep it safe. When a wicked man tried to steal it, Chang'e drank it herself to protect it — and floated up, up, up, all the way to the moon.
Hou Yi missed her terribly. Every year, on the night when the moon was roundest and brightest, he set out her favourite mooncakes and fruits. People everywhere began to do the same, celebrating under the full moon and honouring love, family and reunion.

Activities to try at home
Mooncake tasting: cut a mooncake into small pieces and describe it together — 甜的 (tián de, sweet), 圆的 (yuán de, round), 好吃 (hǎo chī, delicious). Ask 你喜欢月饼吗? (do you like mooncakes?); there's no wrong answer, the conversation is the goal.
Make paper lanterns and use Mandarin as you craft — 红色 (red), 剪 (jiǎn, cut), 灯笼 (lantern), 真漂亮! (so beautiful!). Or draw the phases of the moon and label 新月 (xīn yuè, new moon) and 满月 (mǎn yuè, full moon), then watch the real moon each night leading up to the festival.
Practise simple greetings: 中秋节快乐! (Zhōngqiū Jié kuàilè! — Happy Mid-Autumn Festival!) and 月圆人团圆 (Yuè yuán rén tuányuán — the moon is round, the family is together).
