Dragon Boat Festival for Kids: Traditions and Mandarin Words
Dragon Boat Festival (端午节, Duānwǔ Jié) is loud, colourful and exciting — everything young children love. Dragon boats race across the water, drummers pound rhythms, and families eat sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves. It's a feast for the senses and a wonderful way to introduce Mandarin vocabulary and Chinese culture.
The story of Qu Yuan (a child-friendly retelling)
Long ago there was a wise and kind poet named Qu Yuan (屈原) who loved his country and gave good advice to keep the kingdom strong and peaceful. But some people grew jealous, told lies about him, and the king sent him far away.
When Qu Yuan heard that his kingdom had fallen, his heart broke and he waded into the Miluo River. The people who loved him raced out in their boats to find him, beating drums to scare away the fish and throwing rice into the water so the fish would not disturb him.
That's why, to this day, people race dragon boats and eat zongzi (rice dumplings) — to honour the loyal, kind-hearted poet. For very young children, you can keep it simple: Qu Yuan was a good man, and people celebrate him every year with races and yummy food.

Activities to try at home
Make paper dragon boats: fold a boat from coloured paper, add a dragon head and tail, and decorate. Use Mandarin as you craft — 龙 (lóng, dragon), 船 (chuán, boat), 红色 (red), 漂亮! (beautiful!). Float them in a basin and make drum sounds — 咚咚咚! (Dōng dōng dōng!).
Zongzi tasting: describe the sticky-rice dumplings as you eat — 叶子 (yèzi, leaf), 米饭 (mǐfàn, rice), 热热的 (rè rè de, warm), 好吃 (hǎo chī, delicious). Ask 你喜欢粽子吗? (do you like zongzi?).
Drumming practice: the drum is the heartbeat of the festival. Set out pots and pans, beat a rhythm while chanting 龙舟! 龙舟! (lóngzhōu! — dragon boat!), and have your child echo it. Physical rhythm locks in language — the louder, the better.
Simple festival greetings
Practise 端午节快乐! (Duānwǔ Jié kuàilè! — Happy Dragon Boat Festival!). A more traditional wish is 端午安康 (Duānwǔ ānkāng), wishing peace and good health.
