Chinese Words for Preschoolers

Preschoolers are word sponges. The trick is choosing the right first words — concrete, useful, and connected to their daily world — and giving them lots of cheerful repetition.

The most useful first themes

Start where your child already lives: the people they love, the food on their plate, the animals they adore, and the colours and numbers they're beginning to notice. These themes show up constantly, giving endless natural chances to practise.

Each of our free word books covers one of these themes with simple Mandarin, pinyin, English and tap-to-hear audio, so a two-minute share is always within reach.

Turn words into little sentences

Once a few words are familiar, stitch them into tiny, repeatable phrases — 'I like…', 'this is my…', 'I see a…'. Short patterns let preschoolers feel the satisfying click of saying something real in Mandarin.

Every word page includes a simple example sentence you can read and hear together, so the leap from single words to phrases feels natural.

Frequently asked questions

How many Chinese words should a preschooler learn?
There's no quota. A handful of well-loved words your child uses happily is worth more than a long list they can't recall. Add new ones as interest grows.
Should preschoolers learn characters or just speaking?
Speaking and listening come first at this age. Seeing the characters alongside builds early recognition without pressure to read or write them yet.
